Professor Staffan
Larsson, Linköping universitet
I have been concerned with qualitative studies of a wide
variety of problems in adult education for 25 years. My
training took place in the Gothenburg group that developed
the phenomenographic perspective of the investigation of
learning. Wrote the first text-book on the methodological
implication of the approach. In 1983 I received a PhD at
Göteborg University. After this I became involved in
introducing the ethnographic tradition into Swedish
educational research. Professor of Adult Education at
Linköping University since 1993 - the only chair in the
field in Sweden. I was a visiting scholar at Stanford, US
in 1987/88 and a guest professor at the University of
Western Cape, South Africa in 1999 and will 2004/2005
spend 4 month at University of Technology, Sydney.
I have contributed to the discourse on qualitative
research in different ways: Through doctoral courses in
several Swedish universities and also by writing articles
on different aspects of the practice of qualitative
research. Examples are "Quality in qualitative research",
"Joy and despair in writing" and recently the not yet
published, "Generalisations from qualitative research". To
mention some contributions to the adult education field
there are titles like "Paradoxes of Teaching", "Initial
Encounters in Formal Adult Education" and "The Study
Circle Society". So far I have written more than 130 texts
- books, articles, reports and papers.
